At Showcase PSR, great design begins long before the first sketch. In sectors where change is constant, from science and technology to education and the workplace, Research & Development (R&D) provides the foundation for spaces that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also adaptable, sustainable, and future-ready.
R&D is where challenges are defined, insights are gathered, and options are tested. It’s the stage that ensures design decisions are grounded in evidence, leading to spaces that work hard for their users today and can evolve to meet future needs and challenges.
Our Approach: R&D as the First Step
Every Showcase PSR project begins with a clear client brief. Through collaborative conversations, we uncover the vision, operational needs, and long-term goals that shape the project’s direction. From there, R&D enables us to:
- Explore different materials, technologies, and construction techniques.
- Balance cost, sustainability, and usability to find the right fit.
- Test alternatives before committing to a final design solution.
This is not a standalone service, but an integral part of our design process, ensuring every project is tailored to the client’s needs.
Flexibility in Practice
Flexibility isn’t an afterthought; it’s embedded from the start. Because no two clients are the same, our R&D process adapts to each brief.
In laboratory environments, for example, flexibility extends well beyond the lab bench. Scientists need dedicated write-up areas close to their labs. These are quiet, focused spaces with different seating postures that make it comfortable to switch from hands-on research to detailed written work. The careful integration of these zones, and their positioning within a building is as important as the lab itself.
Examples of how flexibility comes to life include:
- Modular lab furniture that can move between workstations or be reconfigured for new research.
- Multi-use office and social spaces that blend collaboration, focus, and wellbeing.
- Sustainable material choices that reduce environmental impact while meeting compliance standards.
- Integration of new and legacy furniture, providing continuity while optimising budget and resources.
For some clients, flexibility means supporting scientific discovery. For others, it means enabling hybrid working, or creating social spaces that double as collaboration hubs. By tailoring every solution, we make sure flexibility works where it matters most.
Real-World Proof
Our approach to R&D has shaped our most successful projects:
- Altos Labs, Cambridge – Collaborating with MCW Architects, we delivered a complete solution spanning office, lab, and social spaces, ensuring the client’s scientific requirements were met without compromising the desired look and feel.
- University of Hertfordshire (SPECS Building) – Working with Morgan Sindall, we curated flexible, high-quality furniture solutions across five floors of laboratories, offices, and communal areas, balancing sustainability and adaptability to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards.
- University of the Arts London (UAL) – At the London College of Fashion, we helped reimagine teaching and social spaces post-COVID, integrating legacy furniture with new solutions and introducing sustainable materials such as Smile Plastics.
These projects demonstrate how R&D translates into tangible results.
Why Showcase PSR?
Showcase PSR stands apart by combining market knowledge and experience, purchasing power, and end-to-end service. Our team manages every detail, from consultation and product selection to procurement, installation, and aftercare. Being independent, we have no contractual ties to any one manufacturer. This means that we can work in the best interest of the design team and our clients.
Looking Ahead
For us, R&D is more than a process. By embedding research and development in the foundations of every project, we create environments that are flexible, sustainable, and tailored to the people who use them. It’s how we help organisations navigate change with confidence and build spaces ready for the future.
