When the University of Hertfordshire tasked Showcase PSR with revamping their Learning Resource Centre, the goal was to create an environment that felt fresh, adaptable, and inspiring while respecting the university’s long-term vision for potential change, that they weren’t yet
ready to enforce.

The high-traffic space, where students gather for individual and group study, needed a modern, flexible design that maximised functionality on a budget.

Scope & Services

Showcase PSR tackled each floor’s unique needs with custom solutions:

  • Ground Floor: Designed for flexible study, this floor included adaptable seating for groups of 2-8, user-friendly power outlets, and library areas. The open-plan space was arranged to support both solo and group work. We aimed for versatile partitioning by opting for movable planters backed with acoustic boards, a stylish alternative to traditional dividers. This approach not only allowed for flexible zoning but also enhanced noise control and visual appeal. Also featured in the space was a ‘help desk’, accompanied by stylish soft seating.
  • First Floor: Home to specialist PC desks, this floor required custom setups with built-in cable management, accessible power. These features fostered a productive and comfortable environment, meeting the demands of both students and staff.

To achieve the client’s vision, we used a neutral palette complemented by bold colour accents, balancing the old with the new. Moveable grey sofas and multi functional storage units added versatility, making it easy for the layout to evolve as needed.

Success Points

Our strategic approach allowed us to complete installation smoothly over the summer holidays, minimising campus disruption. Thanks to detailed planning and a proactive manufacturing partner, the space was ready well before students returned.

Working with local UK manufacturers allowed us to meet budget constraints while reducing transportation emissions, ultimately saving the university substantial costs. This decision supported the local economy while helping us deliver high-quality, budget-friendly bespoke furniture.

The result was a refreshed, functional, and adaptable space that exceeded the client’s expectations and built on our longstanding partnership with the University of Hertfordshire.

We’re proud to continue shaping their vision for the future of campus spaces, enhancing both the student experience and the university’s commitment to sustainable, stylish design.
