Situated in the East Midlands, the University of Derby’s Cavendish Building sets a new benchmark for academic and industry collaboration. Purpose-built as a seven-storey business school, it is the first of its kind in the region and forms part of Derby’s wider ambition to drive innovation, investment, and high-tech growth.

Showcase PSR was appointed to deliver a full furniture solution for this landmark development, working alongside principal contractors Kier and Overbury. The brief called for a professional, business-led environment that would prepare students for real-world commercial engagement and reflect the University’s forward-thinking vision.

Scope & Services

The works covered furniture selection and specification, space planning, 2D Plans, 3D visuals, bespoke joinery, finishes selection, showroom tours and final delivery and installation. The scope included a wide range of environments, from reception and café areas to classrooms, libraries, meeting rooms, and outdoor terraces. Each space was designed to reflect the building’s elevated corporate identity and support the University’s ambition to inspire future business leaders.

Sustainability was a key focus throughout, with locally sourced materials and recycled content supporting the building’s Net-Zero Carbon certification. The final result is a cohesive, high-performing space that blends academic excellence with commercial relevance.

Accessibility was a key consideration, with features designed to accommodate wheelchair users, neurodivergent students, and ensure DDA compliance. These included height-adjustable desks, inclusive pods and booths, chairs with additional adjustable features and arms, creating a supportive and adaptable environment for all.

Success Points

The Cavendish Building represents a milestone project for Showcase PSR, delivered at scale with precision and in close collaboration with Main Contractors Kier and Overbury, and the University’s project team. Strong communication and detailed planning ensured smooth coordination throughout.

Showcase PSR’s independent supplier model enabled tailored furniture selections that met the University’s aesthetic and functional goals while also achieving cost efficiencies. Accessibility was thoughtfully integrated into the design, with inclusive furniture solutions supporting a diverse user base.
