When Arden University announced the opportunity to design a modern STEM room and Communal Breakout Hub, Showcase PSR were eager to enter the competitive tender process.

Known for their innovative blended learning approach, Arden sought spaces that would support collaborative group work, independent study, and flexible teaching methods – all within a fixed budget. We were excited to bring this vision to life.

Scope & Services

From the project’s outset, we worked hand-in-hand with Arden University, conducting four interactive engagement sessions with end-users to fine-tune the design and ensure it met their unique needs. Arden University needed spaces that could quickly evolve to meet the changing demands of different teaching methods. Whether for collaborative group work, focused IT study, or hybrid sessions, it was essential that each activity, with its unique layout needs, could be easily accommodated.

Close collaboration allowed us to create a space that was not only functional, with furniture that made the most of every corner, but also visually appealing. We carefully selected pieces that combined practicality with style, ensuring the space was both efficient and aesthetically pleasing.

Versatile furniture played a crucial role in creating a dynamic and comfortable learning environment. We selected standing height tables and stacking chairs for their flexibility, ergonomic design, and simple reconfiguration. These pieces were chosen to effortlessly support a range of teaching and learning styles, ensuring the spaces could quickly adapt to everything from group collaborations to focused independent study, all while keeping the environment engaging and functional.

The STEM room was carefully planned with zoning in mind, allowing for both focused individual study and dynamic group work. One section was dedicated to fixed PC workstations, while another featured flexible, movable furniture that could be quickly rearranged to suit group projects, independent study, or hybrid sessions. The integration of the room’s IT systems ensured that the space remained adaptable without compromising on functionality.

Selecting colours and materials that supported both Arden’s branding and the well-being of all students was a central focus. The colour palette and finishes were chosen to create an environment that promoted focus, comfort, and inclusivity, with particular attention given to the needs of neurodiverse students. The result was a space that was not only functional but welcoming to all.

Success Points

The final design of the space perfectly embodied the power of flexible and thoughtful learning environments to enhance the student experience. Creating a dynamic and engaging atmosphere, Showcase PSR has successfully empowered learners to thrive in a setting that catered to their diverse needs.

Sustainability was a foundation of the project. By selecting furniture from trusted manufacturers like Steelcase, whose products are crafted with lifecycle thinking, we ensured long-lasting durability while aligning with our Pathway to Net Zero initiatives. This commitment to sustainability not only made the project environmentally responsible but also future-proofed the design.

The choice of colours and furniture added another layer of depth to the space. The vibrant mesh fabrics on the task chairs injected energy, while also providing a calming effect that benefitted neurodiverse students, promoting focus and reducing anxiety. The ergonomic design and specialist technology within the chairs supported better posture, contributing to the overall well-being of all users.

Showcase PSR’s design focused on creating an adaptable, sustainable, and inclusive environment, one that fosters creativity and innovation while supporting a wide range of learning styles. The result is a modern STEM room and breakout hub that will inspire and support Arden University’s students for years to come.
